BIO

Celebrated Montreal pianist and composer Kate Wyatt is recognized as one of Canada’s leading jazz voices. A nominee for the prestigious Paul de Hueck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award, Wyatt has been praised for her “musical ideas and a style of playing and writing that is on par with the current jazz piano elite” (Pan M 360). Her work blends lyrical sensitivity, bold improvisation, and an instinct for deep ensemble communication - qualities that have earned her comparisons to Brad Mehldau, Shai Maestro, and Fred Hersch.

Wyatt’s acclaimed debut album, Artifact (2022), established her as a vital voice in Canadian jazz, appearing on multiple “Best Jazz of 2022” lists across Canada, the U.S., and Europe. “Pianist and composer Kate Wyatt is making some of Canada’s most exciting and engrossing small-ensemble jazz these days,” wrote Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen.

Her new album, Murmurations (2025), featuring longtime collaborators Adrian Vedady (bass) and Louis-Vincent Hamel (drums), further solidifies her position in the upper echelon of contemporary jazz. “With this record, Kate Wyatt stakes her claim not only as one of Canada’s most compelling jazz voices but as an artist whose work resonates far beyond geographic or genre boundaries,” wrote Thierry De Clemensat, Paris-Move. As Richard Kamins of Step Tempest noted, “There are many piano trio albums released each month. Kate Wyatt and company have made one of the best of this or any year!”

A veteran of major festivals and jazz clubs across Canada and abroad, Wyatt has performed with jazz luminaries including Kenny Wheeler, Jay Clayton, Ira Coleman, Itamar Borochov, Christine Jensen, Allison Au, Yannick Rieu, Phil Dwyer, Don Thompson, Al McLean, and the Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal (ONJ). Known for her creativity, finesse, and profound musical sensitivity, she brings a rare combination of sophistication and emotional clarity to her performances and compositions.

Wyatt’s artistry has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, FACTOR, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the Conseil des arts de Montréal, affirming her status as a vital contributor to Canada’s jazz landscape.

In addition to her work as a performer and composer, Wyatt is a passionate music educator. She heads the jazz program at Marianopolis College, leads masterclasses internationally, and has been a valued member of the CAMMAC (Canadian Amateur Musicians/Musiciens Amateurs du Canada) teaching team for over 15 years. She also serves on the faculty of JazzWorks Canada, where she continues to mentor and inspire the next generation of jazz artists.
