Electronic duo Mikeneko Homeless (mike neko = calico cat) has helped shape the sound of modern Japanese pop thanks to a playful and polished approach to songwriting. The pair dabble in a wide variety of styles both for their own songs and work for some of the most buzzed-about J-pop acts in the country today, often pairing their eclectic dance style with lyrics touching on the challenges of contemporary life.
The pair, consisting of members hironica and mochilon, started working together as Mikeneko Homeless in the late 2000s. They primarily released original work through trailblazing Japanese netlabel Maltine Records. The duo played around with sub-styles of dance music ranging from U.K. Garage to Jersey Club, experimenting with these sounds while also adding a wink to songs such as 2011’s “Kanekure,” wherein the members ask for money from listeners and go as far as to rap their bank account info. While a touch silly, it also reflected the challenges of being young in modern Japan. They also work with emerging Japanese vocal talent in their work as well, from idols like Nagi Nemoto to bedroom artist lulu.
While the group has enjoyed attention for their solo works, Mikeneko Homeless are equally prolific as producers and songwriters for other artists, going as far as to help craft a J-pop sound that is becoming the norm in the 2020s. They’ve worked with an eclectic set of acts such as rap duo chelmico, chart-topping pop group Sexy Zone, singer Erika Nishi, and virtual YouTuber turned popstar Kizuna AI among many others. Their work often joins mellow pop melodies with touches of left-field electronic sounds, offering a distinct texture that’s been developed over more than a decade.
